Great topic. I would add that the key to all this is reduction of threat. There is a great article in the latest Z Health newsletter. I encourage everyone to read, "T is for Threat". If you don't get the newsletter, go to ZHealth.net…

Troy nailed it. To reinforce and sum up what he said "It matters when it matters."

This is a fantastic topic.....I appreciate you making everyone here think more.......including myself. Based on the title of your post I think it is safe to say that you are essentially asking the following: Is strength and/or skill more important…

To quote Walter from this morning, while fighting through box jumps: "It's mind over matter. If you don't mind, it don't matter." I need to go back and read Musashi's The Book of Five Rings again - really good stuff…

strength and sKill or spirit?

This was posted on another web site thought I would share it with you to see what people thought. This knowledge is this old yet we still have gone different directions, I wonder why? Now the question is how do we train the spirit? Hopefully Troy and Chris have some answers..lolIn an old novel by Eiji Yoshikawa, which is roughly based on the life of Musashi Miyamoto there is a passage that reads, "Kojiro had put his confidence in the sword of strength and skill -- Musashi trusted in the sword…See More

cool article, good to see that people of character are standing up for what they think is right and not just going with what is popular.

14 Sept 09Knee Still hurts, Took a day off. Been working on my Z-Health. My emotions with Chunking and re-educating my body seems to be in a order of what and how it happened. When activating some movements specifically it will activate only a specific part of the emotion. The emotions are stable though and are like watching a moving but you feel it. Even with the stress I am feeling more stable.I have been aware of my hip rotation so I have been working on that. I figured my hip flexor and…See More

Training Log 2

After some much needed counseling from Troy that I'm not that crazy I finally got a full nights rest which of course makes everything easier. Also that my routine of training is the right thing to be doing which gave me confidence and faith that I'm on the right track to becoming a top combat athlete. This is how the past couple of days looked.

Stewart's Training log-1 Intro

So this is going to be a regular thing on here. One so everyone can see what other things are going on at the Pound and so Troy can see that I do my homework and I'm not just faking the funk with him.

People who don't know me or my past and the problems I have brought Troy, here is a little back ground on myself. I have been in the Army for 6 years and have let the Army abuse and beat my body and I seemed to excel at taking this better than most. During the past 6 years I have gone… Continue

I think that is a great idea to start adding in some sports skills to the mix of skills we are already developing work capacity within. I think there is a lot of potential there to make our programming more "constantly varied", while using the stress of the workout to train the skill.

I think the only potential issues are:

1. People not being familiar with the skills.
2. People not making the effort to develop the skills in a low-stress situation.
3. People not having the requisite mobility or other function from the body needed to perform the skills (think visual skills and hand eye coordination for basketball).

When you think about it these are the same three issues we face on a day to day basis while coaching/learning CrossFit, so we would be doing no additional harm - just adding more skills to the mix.

It would be a great opportunity to use some of our Z skills to show people what is possible. It is pretty cool when you take someone who catch throw or catch a ball with accuracy or consistency because their vision sucks. Do some drills and see the look on their face when that skill they have never performed well comes to them effortlessly. Then to take that new skill and harden it via CrossFit training would be fun. We could start with some skill training and a workout at the park.......sort of a sports field day.
